B-School: One Size Fits Nobody
around the web nothing to do with art review
Marie Forleo's B-School is an intensive, expensive program promising to walk you through how to get your online business started or existing business growing. It's focused on creating your business's value-aligned marketing through 6 weekly modules. In February 2020 I signed up for B-School. A different online entrepreneur that I like quite a lot and have been following for years was swearing by it, and offered (what I thought at the time) was a very nice bonus incentive for signing up through her. I knew it was an affiliate program and she would get paid for my purchase, but that is...
Weekly Summary - March 12, 2021
around the web art struggles news weekly summary
Why hello again, Friday! Thank god it's the end of the week! Unfortunately, I don't have much progress to report again this week. See last week here. Usually I get a lot of art-ing done on the weekends, but last weekend I took an intensive class that was intended to build a business and website in 48 hours. That...turned out to be an extreme oversimplification, to say the least. With as much copy writing as we had to do (it was taught by a copywriter, so there was an emphasis on that), most of the class was only able to...
There is no "art emergency"
“Buy fewer, better works of art. Buy the best you can afford. Take your time. There is no art emergency.” — Liz Klein (art adviser) I came across this quote as I was reading an older New York Times article about how to buy art. It took me a minute to pull my eyebrows back down to their normal spot after seeing the prices thrown around (tens of thousands & millions of dollars?!?!), but once I recovered I just had to share this quote with you. Because it's so, so true! Please take this advice to heart: there will never be an art...

Race to the Bottom
around the web art struggles news
The more I read about the business side of art, the more convinced I am that working for free or "for exposure" just screws artists over. I believe in an ethos that goes by many names, such as "fuck you, pay me" or "freelance isn't free." Anyone who doesn't charge for their work is hurting the rest of us. They are setting damaging expectations. They show they don't value their time or effort, so why should a buyer? Charging too little is nearly as bad. We don't need to be in a race to the bottom.I spend a lot of time around...
